San Diego Senior Photo Locations: How to Choose the Perfect Spot

When she came to San Diego from out of town for her senior photos, she already knew one thing: she wanted the beach.

She’s a swimmer, the water is a big part of who she is, and she hopes San Diego may eventually become home—she has her sights set on attending San Diego State University.

Suddenly, choosing the beach for her San Diego senior photos wasn't just about finding a beautiful backdrop. It made sense for her. And that's exactly how I think a senior photo location should be chosen.

There are so many beautiful senior photo locations in San Diego, but the best one isn't necessarily the place everyone else is using. It's the location that fits your personality, your interests and this particular chapter of your life.

Because years from now, these photographs won't only remind you of what you looked like during senior year.

They'll remind you of who you were before everything changed.

San Diego Senior Photo Locations: Start With How You Want Your Photos to Feel

Before you start searching Pinterest for the best San Diego senior photo locations, think about you.

Where do you feel most comfortable? What do you love doing? What part of your life right now would you love to remember ten years from now?

For this senior, the answer was easy: the beach. As a swimmer, being near the water felt natural—and having her senior portraits taken in San Diego added another piece to the story as she dreams about attending SDSU.

Your answer may be completely different. As a San Diego senior photographer, part of my job is helping you figure out not simply where we'll take your pictures, but which location will feel most like you.

For the Senior Who Belongs at the Beach

If the ocean has always been part of your story, a San Diego beach senior photo session is hard to beat. Coronado, Scripps and Torrey Pines each give us something a little different—from wide stretches of sand to cliffs, pathways and gorgeous evening light.

And someday, that beach may mean even more.

It might take you right back to sandy towels piled in the car, afternoons with friends, swim practices, family beach days or that last San Diego summer before everyone started leaving for college.

Sometimes a location isn't just a backdrop.

Sometimes it's part of your story.

For the Senior Who Wants Something Natural

Not every San Diego senior portrait session needs sand and ocean.

Trails, trees, open spaces and tall grasses create a completely different feeling. These locations are beautiful for seniors who want something relaxed and natural, and they give us plenty of room for movement.

Walking, laughing, wind in your hair—those little in-between pieces are often where the photographs that feel the most like you happen.

For the Senior Who Loves Architecture and Variety

If you want several different looks in one location, Balboa Park is a great option. Architecture, greenery, staircases, pathways and interesting textures give us plenty of variety without spending your session driving around San Diego.

It's also perfect if you're planning a couple of different outfits and want your senior pictures to have different looks while still feeling connected.

Still Not Sure Which Location Is Right for You?

I put together a quick video about how to choose your senior picture location and what I consider when helping my seniors decide.

Beach? Rustic? Architecture? Start with how you want your photos to feel. We'll figure out the where together.

Think About What You Want to Remember

This is the part I wish every senior—and every mom—would think about.

Senior year is busy. College applications, practices, games, dances, friends and a whole lot of conversations about what comes next. Meanwhile, the ordinary pieces of life are quietly getting ready to change.

The backpack by the door. The car in the driveway. Friends who don't need to knock. The bedroom down the hall. The familiar drive to school.

Right now, none of that feels particularly extraordinary.

Give it a few years.

Your senior pictures may eventually remind you of so much more than what you looked like at 17 or 18. They can take you right back to the person you were and the life you were living before the next chapter began.

What Should You Wear for Senior Pictures?

Your wardrobe and location should work together.

A flowy dress can be beautiful at the beach, while layers and texture can work perfectly in a more rustic setting.

If you're already wondering what to wear for your senior pictures, I put together a blog post to help you plan outfits that photograph beautifully and work with your location.

And don't worry—you don't have to figure any of this out alone. Location and wardrobe planning are both part of the experience when you book with me.

Your Senior Year Only Happens Once

There will be plenty of beautiful places in your future.

But there is only one senior year—and one version of you standing right here before everything begins to change.

So when you're choosing where to take your senior photos in San Diego, don't worry about finding the location everyone else is using.

Choose the place that feels like you.

Because years from now, that's the person you're going to want to remember.

I'd love to help you plan a senior portrait session—from choosing a location and wardrobe to guiding you through every step once you're in front of my camera.
