Senior Photoshoot Basics: The Before, During & After

Updated: Feb 14

Your senior year is a monumental milestone that deserves to be celebrated with gusto! One powerful way to capture this incredible time is through a senior photoshoot session. If you’ve never booked a professional photo session before or simply want to know what to expect from a senior session, this guide has got you covered.

Here’s what you need to know to make this experience unforgettable…

The Before

- Yearbook deadlines. Your school’s yearbook is a timeless keepsake. Find out the deadline for submitting your digital photo file. Planning ahead is key to making sure you hit that deadline and shine in those pages!

- The location. Choose a location that screams YOU! Picture yourself in your element – where do you feel most alive? The right location will tell your unique story. There are endless exciting options to explore.

- Sooner rather than later. Senior photo sessions are in high demand. Don’t wait! Book your session a few months in advance to secure your spot and avoid disappointment.

- The outfit. Your outfit should be a reflection of your personality and complement the location. Pick something that makes you feel confident and comfortable. Avoid anything too flashy that might steal the spotlight from your radiant self.

- Hair and makeup arrangements. Don’t procrastinate on your hair and makeup plans. Decide on your look early and choose whether you’ll DIY or go pro. Your final look should make you feel unstoppable.

The During

- Set aside 2 hours. Carve out 1 to 2 hours for your senior photo session. This includes time to get ready and make sure you’re feeling your best.

- Meeting up. On the big day, meet your photographer at your chosen location at the agreed time. Leave the nerves at home! Your photographer is your ally, there to ensure you have an epic time and get the stunning photos you’ve dreamed of.

- Prepare to change outfits. Consider bringing an extra outfit to switch into during your shoot. Different outfits can highlight different aspects of your personality and look amazing in various settings. Discuss this with your photographer ahead of time.

- Bring some company. If having a friend or family member along will boost your confidence, bring them! Just remember, too many people can be distracting. Choose wisely.

- Sign a model release. Before you arrive to your session, you’ll most likely have signed a contract and a model release form. This is standard practice and paves the way for your photos to be shared and celebrated.

The After

- The wait. Great things take time! Your photographer will need a week or so to perfect your images. Patience is your friend here.

- Share and enjoy. Once your photos are ready, share them far and wide! Print them, post them, and revel in the memories of your senior year.

This is a basic idea of what you can expect from your senior photo session. Don’t hesitate to ask your photographer any additional questions you may have. Embrace this moment with all your heart. Your senior year is a time of triumph, and your photos should reflect the incredible journey you’ve been on. Get ready to shine and make memories that will last a lifetime!
